When guitarist Ronnie Wood first toured with the Rolling Stones in 1975 in place of Mick Taylor, who had quit the group in late 1974, he was still officially a member of the Faces. Wood already had history with the band, though, having collaborated with singer Mick Jagger on It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It) and played acoustic guitar on the record. The Faces disbanded in December, and Wood officially joined the Stones the following year.
The first time I remember noticing her was in the movie Vanilla Sky. I was, like, Oh (explicit), who is that? What a (explicit). Just watching her actually makes you feel stronger. She can scare the (explicit) out of you and break your heart and give you a boner all at the same time.
When Ringo Starr had to be hospitalized for tonsillitis in 1964, the Beatles pulled in session drummer Jimmie Nicol on a day’s notice. He was quickly given a moptop haircut and one of Starr’s suits, and he played his first concert as a temporary Beatle on June 4, 1964. He played a total of eight shows before Starr rejoined the group in Melbourne, Australia.
Axl Rose may have boycotted Guns N’ Roses induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that didn’t stop the group’s three other founding members — Slash, Duff McKagan and Izzy Spradlin — from going on with the show in 2012. They just brought in Myles Kennedy, who fronts Slash’s solo band and Alter Bridge, to sing Rose’s parts.

Several months after Queen frontman Freddie Mercury’s 1991 death, the group’s three surviving members held a tribute concert at London’s Wembley Stadium that featured superstars like George Michael, Elton John and Axl Rose performing the group’s songs with the band. From 2005 to 2009, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor toured with Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers as Queen + Paul Rodgers. Former American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has performed with the group since 2011. When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Nirvana in 2014, surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic recruited four women to sing late frontman Kurt Cobain’s songs. Lord sang All Apologies, Joan Jett covered Smells Like Teen Spirit, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon performed Aneurysm and St. Vincent did Lithium.
At Charlie Daniels’ Volunteer Jam in 1979, the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for the first time since the 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of three of its members. Charlie Daniels Band keyboardist sang the group’s cover of J.J. Cale’s Call Me the Breeze, filling in for the late Ronnie Van Zant, but the version of Free Bird that night was played as an instrumental.
